History: GH Oak Valley, which opened in 1998, is the first center that Gretchen built from the ground up. To give it a home-like, cozy feeling, the building has several “pods” of classrooms each centered around their own living space and kitchen. It also has a large gym for gross-motor play and special events. There are three playgrounds: one for infants and toddlers, one for preschoolers that includes winding bike paths and an antique playhouse, and one for young 5s and school-age children. This center is located on the edge of several newer neighborhoods which are linked by footpaths and parks through a wooded area. It is next to two popular sports facilities: Wide World of Sports and the Ice Cube. In addition, one of the Ann Arbor District Library’s newest branches opened across the street in 2006.

Meet Our Director:  Karin Nowak joined Gretchen’s House in November, 2007. Karin graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in Child Development. She has worked in early childhood since 1984 in a variety of early childhood settings. Karin taught first and third grade, owned and operated a child care center for 12 years and was Preschool Coordinator for Tecumseh Public Schools. She has four children, two of whom are in college. In her spare time Karin enjoys attending her children’s sporting events, playing cards and games with her family and reading.
